Carbon - The Great Detoxifier

Carbon is a universal media in water treatment as it adsorbs many toxic contaminants.

Chlorine and chloramines are added to almost every city's water. Chlorine has been used for over a century. However, chlorine is a toxic irritant to the human body. It may have been a major factor in the increased heart disease and cancer rates.

Virtually all city water is chlorinated for antiseptic reasons and fluoridated for no good reason. Both of these chemical halogens are toxic to biological systems and must be removed from the water before consumption to prevent long term illness.

Carbon has a high affinity for chlorine, chloramines and organic contaminants, and is very effective in removing these from water for drinking, cooking, showering or bathing.

Carbon contains pores that adsorb chlorine and other poisons and hold them from passing on to the consumer. However, it becomes saturated after a while and may reach the point that it cannot remove any more. If carbon is used by itself, it will have a shortened effective life.

In this situation, if people do not change a carbon filter soon enough, before long they are drinking water that may be as loaded with chlorine as raw city tap water!

Be aware that Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), the traditional and most commonly used filter media, does not really purify water as it does not destroy or remove bacteria. In fact, it can be a breeding ground for bacteria growth when sitting for a time unused. Silver added to carbon can inhibit bacteria growth when the filter is idle, but it does not kill bacteria coming through in the water.

Redox media, an alloy of copper and zinc, reduces chlorine and destroys bacteria. Used in conjunction with carbon in water purification, this media prolongs the life of the carbon.

Due to its superior removal of organic pollutants, chlorine and chloramines, carbon is usually combined with the various methods of water purification. As long as carbon is changed often or protected by a preceding method of removing chlorine, it has a valuable role.

Catalytic bone char carbon, now the default standard fluoride removal media used in our Fluoride Removal Cartridges, also removes chlorine, chloramines and many pesticides and herbicides effectively by adsorption. This special carbon can be used over a wide pH range, with nearly complete effectiveness in elimination of fluoride, lead and arsenic.

All of our water purifying systems contain coconut shell carbon or catalytic bone char carbon. and take care of thoroughly removing the chlorine and chloramines in any water supply. Carbon also takes out many pesticides, herbicides and VOC's (volatile organic compounds).
